Microsoft’s latest database management system technology, SQL Server 2008, was released on August 6th, 2008. SQL Server 2008 is a powerful tool for managing, organizing and maintaining data. It is a fast, easy and time-saving way for managing and working with data. SQL Server 2008 is also reliable, secure and scalable for providing critical applications.

Some of the new features added to SQL Server 2008 are briefly explained below:

  1. Using SQL Server 2008 we can now encrypt the entire database, data files or specific fields. This process can be done without any changes in the application. Encryption is mostly useful for securing critical-business applications in organizations.
  2. SQL Server 2008 helps us make our applications more secure by auditing the activities on applications’ data. In fact, it is now possible to record any changes that happen on the data without extra coding. We can even figure our when the data has been read by simply enabling a configuration setting.
  3. SQL Server 2008 manages structured and semi-structured data as multimedia data (such as digital media formats for pictures, audio and video).
  4. Data comparison is a strong feature in SQL Server 2008. The ability to comprise between data causes to require less storage area.
  5. Database administrators in SQL Server 2008 can use Resource Governor to recognize resource limitations and the priorities for various workflows.
  6. Another useful feature is Backup Compression. Storing disk-based backup online is time consuming and requires a lot of disk space. But by using SQL Server 2008 Backup Compression, the necessary space for backing up the data is reduced. It also requires fewer disk I/O access and therefore running backups happen faster.

There are even more features that causes a lot of interest in using SQL Server 2008. There useful features really make SQL Server 2008 different from previous versions in terms of reducing organization’s operational costs.
