Mobile software for working on-the-go
Mobile software for working on-the-go

As technology innovation and adoption increases, it is not surprising that the number of employees working remotely is continuing to follow the same pattern. More and more businesses are providing employees with the choice of working outside of the office, using personal mobile devices. In 2010, there were already around 1 billion employees globally using virtual desktops to work remotely, which IT analyst IDC predicted would rise to 1.3 billion, or 37% of the global workforce, by 2015.

UK companies are embracing software mobility

65% of companies expect one third of their staff members to work on-the-go, according to a study by O2. This is down to the employers’ wish to take advantage of workers who choose to work more flexibly. 91% of businesses said they would gain more business agility, as well as 83% who would save money by employing mobile workers. 79% of companies also believed that implementing mobile working for their staff would increase the overall productivity within their organisation.

With mobile working evidently on the increase, it is important that employees are able to work effectively. This necessitates software that is optimised for mobile use. The cost to purchase a number of mobile devices from which employees can work may be extensive; so many employers are beginning to use a ‘bring your own device’ strategy for employees who wish to work remotely.

‘Bring your own device’ as a business solution

22% of the world’s population now own a smartphone, and 6% own a tablet. This means that employees using their own devices are likely to be more effective than employees trying to use unfamiliar devices provided by the company.

This is also cost-effective for the business, giving employees flexibility without increased costs. It also means that employees are responsible for their own devices. If devices get broken, it is the employee’s choice whether they replace or fix them if they desire to work remotely. Many employees who use public transport may choose to utilise their commute to work productively by working remotely.

Increased popularity of ‘bring your own device’ in businesses

According to Ovum, technology analyst, over 70% of employees with a mobile device have used it to do work remotely, accessing corporate data. Consumer Impact Technology Analyst, Richard Absalom, suggested that many employees would use their personal mobile devices for working remotely regardless of whether they had obtained permission from their employer or not.

With increasing numbers of employees owning mobile devices from which they could work, this is a tool that companies may be able to take advantage of by making sure that their software is mobile-friendly and easy to use from mobile devices. Doing this could not only increase employee engagement and productivity, but give staff increased flexibility when working.

Optimising software for remote working

With an undeniable rise in the number of employees working on-the-go, it is vital that applications are responsive and suitable for mobile working. If VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructures) are being used, software must be responsible and compatible to use, otherwise the ability for employees to work on a mobile basis is reduced.
