Big Bad Wolf is an integrated creative agency using storytelling and experiential marketing to catapult its clients’ success. Their campaigns have powered the brand stories behind global giants including Gucci, Bombay Sapphire and Lacoste.

In 2018, multinational spirits brand Bacardi approached the agency to create a one-of-a-kind, engaging experience for consumers that would stand out in the competitive landscape of travel retail. Big Bad Wolf had an exciting creative concept but needed the right technology partner to bring their idea to life.

The challenge

Bacardi wanted to revolutionise brand awareness and engagement through personalisation, in a drive to increase sales and inspire consumer loyalty. They worked with Big Bad Wolf to create a provocative brand story and the #MYBACARDI campaign. It consisted of a labelling system and an engaging and user-friendly mobile app that allows customers to personalise their Bacardi bottles with their name or a unique message.

The global travel retail industry produces over $10bn each year, and Bacardi wanted to increase their share of this market by launching #MYBACARDI in airports around the globe. However, they knew that the limited access to WiFi in airports would pose a challenge when connecting the mobile app to printers. They also knew that the hardware needed to deliver this campaign had to be portable and wireless.

Big Bad Wolf reached out to Geeks to provide the solution to these challenges. They had a bold and clear vision but needed a technology partner with a proven track record in hardware integration and mobile app development to bring this exciting campaign to life.

The solution

The technical team at Geeks were tasked with finding an innovative solution to address Big Bad Wolf’s challenging requirements while staying on budget and meeting the ambitious deadlines set by Bacardi.

The solution was a mobile application that was linked to dedicated printers by a Raspberry Pi computer. One main benefit of the hardware is its low cost and ease of use, allowing rapid roll-out across Bacardi’s retail locations.

Geeks worked closely with Big Bad Wolf and Bacardi to create a stylish, sleek, and user-friendly app. Agile practices allowed Big Bad Wolf to experiment with different design ideas and have early visibility of the product and its functionality. The final application followed Barcardi’s strict brand guidelines and was ready for use within weeks.

As well as collaborating with Big Bad Wolf and Bacardi, Geeks worked with Primera Technology to integrate the app with their state-of-the-art printers. Liaising with three parties to deliver a product could have been challenging, but Geeks’ highly skilled project management team and efficient processes ensured that communication was smooth and all stakeholders were happy with the process.
